Lighting of tree and menorah to be center of activities at First Fridays art walk

The 4th annual Bixby Knolls tree- and menorah-lighting ceremony will take place by the fountains at Nino’s Italian Restaurant, 3853 Atlantic Ave., beginning at 6pm, during the First Fridays art walk on Dec. 2. The event will include carols and hot chocolate, and the lights will be turned on at 6:30pm.
The Bixby Knolls Business Improvement Association (BKBIA) is encouraging area businesses, schools, and residents to donate tree decorations. Ornaments may be taken to the tree-lighting ceremony.
The Bixby Belle mascot will pass out candy canes and Day-Glo bracelets to kids, and a local Girl Scout troop will lead a post-ceremony parade.
First Fridays highlights will include:
• First Books at First Fridays at the Dana Branch Library, 3680 Atlantic Ave., at 5:30pm. Guest readers will be community leaders John Royce and Thor Carlson.
• Santa’s Workshop at First Bank, 4040 Atlantic Ave., with Santa , music, and Big Elf
• Long Beach Clothing Co. will donate 10 percent of all sales to the Bixby Knolls Camp Fire Neighborhood Association for its community tree planting project on Jan. 8
• “Cider stops” at About U, Averyboo Arts, Bella Cosa, Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf and It’s a Grind Coffee House
• Egg nog at Roy Robbins Gifts & Stationery
• A scavenger hunt for kids in six locations: Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, Roy Robbins Gifts, Averyboo Arts, Bixby Exchange, EmbroidMe, and It’s a Grind.
• Uptown Village Market at the Expo Arts Center
• A comedy improv show, “Wreck the Halls,” at Elise’s Tea Room
• Over 10 music stations that feature tunes ranging from holiday songs, jazz, blues, rock, dance hits and the Sublime tribute band Saw Red

The Big Red Bus will transport First Fridays attendees to all the participating locations. Bella Cosa, 3803 Atlantic Ave., will provide information about First Fridays, maps, and restaurant recommendations from from 6:30pm to 8pm.
When the businesses start to close, First Fridays After Hours begins across the district. Nino’s Italian Restaurant will host a mix of music, dancing, and late-night dining. The Factory and EJ Malloy’s will also go late into the night with dinner, drinks, music, and community mingling.
