Commander Galen Carroll of the Long Beach Police Department North Division and the Bixby Knolls Business Improvement Association released the following tips this week for businesses to remind them to take the necessary precautions to stay safe and avoid any incidents.

• Call 9-1-1 for police or fire assistance from a landline telephone, or call (562) 435-6711 from a cell phone
• Outdoor lighting— Install motion detectors and halogen bulbs
• Interior lighting— Keep lights on at night when the business is closed. Keep it well lit.
• Windows— Keep windows clear of too much signage
• Street addresses— Make address clearly visible and well-lighted on the front and rear of the business.
• Secure doors and windows each night
• Bolt down cash registers
• Empty all cash registers when business is closed
• Keep only necessary cash in the register, and vary the schedule and route of bank deposits.
• Keep windows free of signs and banners so there is always a clear view into the business.
• Install a camera surveillance system, and make sure all cameras are working and recording.
• Advertise your security alarm system with signs in visible locations.
• Develop a mutual-aid system among nearby businesses
