A decade-long tradition continues as Buono’s Authentic Pizzeria encourages third through fifth graders, and this year 10th graders, throughout Long Beach, Signal Hill and San Pedro to participate in its 10th Annual School Poetry Contest. So far, 24 schools have committed to participating and more than 4,000 students are being encouraged to submit an entry.
Past winning poems have ranged from honoring Italian inventors, artists, musicians and athletes to paying tribute to Italian monuments and cities. This year’s theme “Italy…a Perfect 10!” allows students to write about what they like best about Italy in the areas of current news and events, the arts, culture and traditions and its rich history.
Each school can submit up to 10 poems. From those finalists, up to five winners are chosen from each school.
All winners receive a $50 gift certificate to Buono’s Authentic Pizzeria. The top three winners from each school will have their poems featured in the booklet of winning entries produced by Buono’s. Every school’s first-place winner is honored with a pizza party in his/her classroom and this year will also be invited with their family to a party at Buono’s in honor of the 10th anniversary of the contest.
Youth and Poets’ Choice awards, selected by a youth advisory council and California State University Long Beach professors, will also be awarded. All winners are announced at the end of the school year during assemblies and in classroom presentations made by the Buono’s family.
“During this decade-long tradition, we have always enjoyed celebrating the tremendous creativity of local students,” says Frank Buono, owner of Buono’s Authentic Pizzeria, located in Long Beach and San Pedro since 1973. “We hope every elementary and high school (public and private) will join in.”
