Neena StrichartFirst Fridays in Bixby Knolls has been, and continues to be, a fun and sometimes educational way to spark interest in the many businesses on the Atlantic corridor. This Friday night, May 2, will be no exception.
As part of the Long Beach First Fridays events, the Bixby Knolls Business Improvement Association’s office, 4313 Atlantic Avenue, will feature photographer Susan Sabo’s art prints of dogs currently waiting for adoption in local shelters and agencies.
“This Is Who We Are: Photography by Susan Sabo” is a collection of photographs of shelter and rescue dogs in need of homes. Sabo, a freelance photographer, brings her signature style of environmental portraiture to a cause close to her animal activist heart. Volunteers and representatives from various shelters will be there during her First Fridays showing to answer questions and provide information. Prints will be available for purchase, with proceeds going to participating shelters. “The goal of the show is to help make the community aware of just how many dogs need homes,” said Sabo recently. “Eight to 12 million cats and dogs enter shelters every year in the United States. Sixty to 70 percent of them are eventually euthanized. We have to start taking responsibility for these statistics.” puppy-thoughts-2.jpg
The exhibit features dogs from a number of shelters and rescue groups, including Hearts for Hounds, the Orange County and Long Beach animal shelters, and the East Valley Animal Shelter in North Hollywood. The show is open for one night only on May 2 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Bixby Knolls Business Improvement Association, and will then move to It’s A Grind Coffee House at 4245 Atlantic Avenue where the exhibit will be on display from May 3 to May 31.
