In a change from years past, applicants for two seats on three city commissions were given a chance to make their case to the City Council Tuesday, but in the end, they could not sway the Councilmembers.
Tom Jenkins and Ed Villanueva made their respective bids for the vacant seats on the Parks and Recreation Commission, but it was not enough.
Ken Davis and Robert Tickell will return to the Parks and Recreation Commission, and Victor Parker and Rose Richard will fill the two vacancies on the Civil Service Commission. Jane Fallon was in no danger of losing her Planning Commission seat, which she has held since 1991, and Falanai Ala will return to the commission as well.
The Council also endorsed Sen. Alan Lowenthal’s Senate Bill 974, which levies a $30 user-fee on containers moving through the Long Beach, Los Angeles and Oakland ports. Half of the revenues will fund cargo efficiency projects and the second half, to be funded initially through bonds, will go to mitigating air pollution at the three ports.
The next City Council meeting will be Tuesday, June 12, at City Hall.
