Greenly Art Space in Signal Hill will host an opening reception Saturday, May 20 for Within the Wilderness, a fundraising art show aimed at supporting the nonprofit gallery, as well as Bolsa Chica Land Trust, a local organization involved with environmental restoration.
In the exhibit, each art piece explores the artist’s personal interpretation of the idea of “wilderness.” Some artwork is based on the beauty and wonder found in wilderness and nature, whereas other pieces explore the dark, emotional turmoil of human experience of being within the wild.
Others are abstract pieces. One such artist, Roxanne Norman, submitted a painting titled “A Secret Garden.”
“The world of imagination itself is a kind of wilderness, with its vast choice of colors, lines, and shape-shifting forms,” Norman said. “A Secret Garden became the tangible expression of my imagination’s journey within the wilderness of artistic creation.”
Greenly’s director, Kimberly Hocking, said it is the gallery’s hope that the show inspires artists and viewers to consider how the concept of “wilderness” impacts their lives.
“We are excited to have the funds raised go back into supporting Greenly’s mission to provide a space for community artists to inspire others and be inspired,” she said. “We are also excited that a portion of funds raised will go to help with habitat restoration in our local community.”
For the opening night, Greenly Art Space has also invited Long Beach band The Previous Owners to return to perform.
Greenly is located at 2698 Junipero Ave. #113, in Signal Hill. There will be an entrance fee of $15 per person at the May 20 opening, which will take place from 7pm to 9pm.
The artwork presented will be for sale. A portion of the proceeds will go to Bolsa Chica Land Trust to further their cause for environmental preservation and restoration.
The exhibit will run through July 14 and can be viewed by appointment by calling (562) 533-4020 or during regular gallery hours: Monday, Wednesday, Friday 11am to 2pm.
