A bicyclist was killed on Aug. 2, after being struck by a pick-up truck, according to the Long Beach Police Department (LBPD).
At approximately 6:35am that day, officers were dispatched to the area of Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue and E.7th Street regarding an injury-traffic collision.
When officers arrived, they found a male adult lying in the bed of a pick-up truck that had apparently struck him. The truck was stopped in the eastbound lanes of E. 7th Street at Alamitos Avenue. Long Beach Fire Department paramedics responded and transported him to a local hospital with traumatic injuries. He later succumbed to those injuries.
The investigation revealed the bicyclist was riding west on the south sidewalk along E. 7th Street. As he neared the crosswalk for E. 7th Street on the west side of the intersection with Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue, he quickly entered the eastbound lanes of E. 7th Street while traveling west. Once in the roadway, a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado traveling east on E. 7th Street being driven by a 41-year-old male resident of Long Beach immediately struck the bicyclist.
After the collision, the driver immediately stopped and rendered aid to the bicyclist while performing CPR in the bed of his truck as witnesses called 9-1-1, police said.
The driver of the Chevrolet had a valid driver’s license and proof of insurance. Alcohol was not a factor in the collision.
The bicyclist is only being identified as a 35-year-old male resident of Long Beach pending next-of-kin notification.
