The Signal Hill Police Department (SHPD) arrested and charged a suspect Thursday, Sept. 4, for kidnapping and lewd acts with a child in the area of Walnut Avenue and Hill Street, according to a department press release this week.

At around 9pm, SHPD officers were patrolling the aforementioned streets when they identified a suspicious vehicle parked in the area. The officers spoke to the two occupants of the vehicle– two individuals who seemed “nervous,” according to the SHPD press release– and questioned their purpose for being there.

One of the occupants, a juvenile, said Pedro Rodriguez-Mejia, 41, the driver of the vehicle, picked him up on the 1400 block of Walnut Avenue in Long Beach.

During the investigation, SHPD officers discovered that Rodriguez-Mejia kidnapped the juvenile victim about an hour before they were detained by police and, instead of driving the juvenile home as promised, drove to Signal Hill and forced him to perform lewd acts, according to the press release.

Based on information provided during interviews, Rodriguez-Mejia was arrested for several charges, including kidnapping and lewd acts with a child. His bail was set at $10,000, which was posted Wednesday evening. Rodriguez-Mejia is scheduled to appear in Long Beach court on Sept. 27.

The SHPD is seeking the public’s help for more information about the incident and identifying other victims. Call (562) 989-7200.
