As we all look forward to our Labor Day holiday weekend, there are a few important items I’d like to share with you.

2010 Proposed Budget

As we approach the end of the budget process in September, I ask everyone to contact me through email, letters and phone calls regarding your priorities and concerns for the 2010 Proposed Budget before September 15, when the City Council will adopt the new budget. I value your opinion and urge you to attend all workshops, meetings and hearings being held at the City Chambers in upcoming afternoons and evenings. Budget workshops are from 3pm to 5pm on September 1 and 8. The Budget hearings are from 7pm to 8:30pm on September 1 and 8. To find out more information about the proposed budget, please visit

Latin American Parade and Festival
As the chair of the Honorary Committee, I would like to invite you to our very First Latin American Parade and Festival. The celebration begins with a parade down Pine Avenue at 3pm. The parade progresses through the heart of Downtown Long Beach and ends in the East Village Arts District, where the festival will be in full swing from 4pm—10pm. The festival features a food court, dance classes, art lectures, vendor booths, kids’ activity area and more, all celebrating the beauty and historical legacy of the Latin American community. Contact my office for application to participate at (562) 570-6139.

Youth Leader Opportunities
I’m calling all youth who want to make a difference in our community to participate in the governmental process and become Youth Leaders. I’m looking for young men and women who want to prepare great projects for the upcoming academic year. Youth Leaders will address the needs, concerns, and problems of their peers to the Commission of Youth and Children and to the rest of the city of Long Beach. You can be a leader for events, fundraisers, and service learning projects. Contact my office at (562) 570-6139 for more details.

Labor Day Library Closures
The Labor Day holiday weekend will affect our city library hours. On Saturday, September 5, El Dorado, Bret Harte, Mark Twain and North neighborhood libraries are open while Main, Alamitos, Bach, Bay Shore, Brewitt, Burnett, Dana, and Los Altos neighborhood libraries are closed. On Sunday, September 6, 2009, all libraries are closed. On Monday, September 7, all libraries are closed. All libraries will reopen on Tuesday, September 8.

As always, please feel free to contact me at [email protected] or call me on my office phone at (562) 570-6139.

Thank you and enjoy a fun and safe Labor Day holiday!
