LBPD advises parking safety during youth sporting events

careful parkingThe Long Beach Police Department would like to inform residents that criminals might target vehicles at parks during youth sporting events.
Criminals know vehicles will be left unattended for long periods of time while parents are watching their children.
As summer approaches and youth activities at local parks increase, residents are reminded to take the necessary precautions to ensure their safety and the safety of their property.
Furthermore, residents are encouraged to practice the following safety tips whenever they leave their vehicles unattended:
• Park in well-lit areas whenever possible.
• Do not leave your car in an unattended lot for an extended period of time.
• Lock your car doors and take the keys with you.
• Roll the windows up all the way and secure the vent or wind-wing windows.
• Remove valuables such as cell phones, stereos, purses, wallets and shopping bags, or secure them in the trunk.
• Never leave a hidden key on your vehicle.
• Program the Long Beach Police Department phone number, (562) 435-6711, into your cellular phone.
Parents are also urged to remind their children about the following safety tips:
• Always be alert and aware of your surroundings and the people around you.
• Be aware of locations and situations which could make you vulnerable to crime, such as dark parking lots, walkways and restrooms.
• Stay in well-lit areas as much as possible.
• Whenever possible, travel with a friend–there is safety in numbers
