SHPD traffic-calming devices picThe Signal Hill Police Department recently announced the installation of two pole-mounted radar speed warning signs on Cherry Avenue, north of 21st Street. These devices are designed to remind drivers of the speed limit on the roadway by providing feedback of their speed as displayed on an LED readout. Studies have shown that devices such as these can reduce speeds on a roadway by as much as 30 percent.
The location for the devices was carefully considered by the Signal Hill Traffic Safety Committee and selected because of its close proximity to Alvarado Elementary School and the new middle school that is being constructed nearby. The devices are solar powered and need little to no maintenance. They were funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
