Three Long Beach high-school students competed in Minneapolis, Minnesota for the USA Diving Western Junior National Championships last weekend. Wilson High School senior Larry Reinhard, Jr. and Poly High School sophomore Deon Reid both qualified to compete in the boys 16- to18-year-old competition. Millikan High School senior Paulina Guzman qualified in the girls 16- to 18-year-old competition.
Reid, a Bixby Knolls resident, had the best finish of the Long Beach divers, with a fifth-place finish in his age group’s one-meter springboard competition— the highest Southern California finisher, with only 27.45 points separating him from first place. With average scores of 45 to 55 points per dive, this is a very small margin.

Reinhard was also the top Southern California finisher in his age group’s three-meter springboard competition. The event is his final USA Diving Spring Junior West Championship. He earned an impressive score of 60.20 on the reverse two-and-a-half dive. Reinhard is moving on to Stanford University in the fall, where he will compete in NCAA Division I.
Guzman also participated in her last USA Diving Spring Junior West Nationals before moving on to UCLA in the fall. In a very difficult field with only 22.75 separating her from first place, she bested two-thirds of the field.
Thirteen-year-old Clark Pitti and 12-year-old Brandon Loschiavo also qualified for spring nationals in the boys 14-15 and boys 12-13 events, respectively.
