Coleen Vandepas of the Wrigley Neighborhood Association wrote the nomination essay. “Veterans Memorial Park is the recreational heart of the Wrigley community and one of the most utilized parks in Long Beach,” Vandepas wrote in her essay. “The park provides recreational open space for residents of a densely populated area and a safe place for young and old to exercise, enjoy the outdoors, form lasting friendships and strengthen family bonds.” She also described how the heavy use of the park has created dirt fields and worn out play equipment.
