Tincher Preparatory School, 1701 Petaluma Ave., will have its annual Carnival and Car Show on Saturday, May 15, from 11am to 5pm. The event will take place on the school grounds, located near the corner of Atherton Street and Studebaker Road. There will be carnival attractions, food, games and activities for kids of all ages. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Long Beach Area Republican Party— an organization that now includes the Long Beach Republican Women Federated, Long Beach GOP Republican Women Federated, Long Beach Young Republicans, Long Beach Lincoln Club, and the Los Angeles Youth Republicans. Rancho Los Cerritos, 4600 Virginia Rd. will host a Spring Festival on Sunday, May 23 from 12:30pm to 4:30pm. Titled “A Visit to Old California,” the event will explore ranch life in the early 19th century through: living-history performances by Father Serra, Lotta Crabtree and others; a skit on traveling cross-county by wagon; demonstrations of blacksmithing, rope making and leather tooling; and many hands-on period crafts and activities. Musical Theatre West’s Footlighters fundraiser will be Sunday, May 23 at 4pm at the historic Bixby House in Bixby Knolls. Honorary co-chairs Jean Bixby Smith and Barbara Bixby Blackwell will preside over the festivities, which will include a barbecue, entertainment, house tour and raffle. In honor of Memorial Day, the Friends of Signal Hill Library will present John J. Gobbell, author of five historical novels on World War II, on Monday, May 24 at 7pm Signal Hill Park Community Center, 1780 E. Hill St. Gobbell was a U.S. Navy deck officer aboard destroyers who participated in the Vietnam conflict and served in the weapons department. He has conducted assignments for military contractors interviewing hundreds of executives responsible for major defense systems. The process piqued his interest in character development, and, coupled with a keen interest in the events of World War II, it led to the development of his first four novels.
